General description

Sodium bisulfite is a widely used industrial chemical as a reducing agent, catalyst, and preservative in pharmaceuticals and foods due to its antioxidative and antibacterial effects.
The aqueous solutions of sodium bisulfite are acidic in nature. Degradation of sodium bisulfite with acid forms sulfur dioxide gas.[1]

Application

Sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) has been used as a reagent to compose the immunoprecipitation (IP) buffer to chemically modify DNA[2] and to synthesize arsenolipids (AsL).[3]
It can also be used as a reagent during the synthesis of 5,6-dihydrouracil-6-sulfonate.[4]
Sodium bisulfite can be used as:
  • A reagent to synthesize aldehyde-bisulfite adducts from aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes.
  • A catalyst in the solvent-free etherification of aromatic/aliphatic alcohols to synthesize symmetric and unsymmetric ethers via intermolecular dehydration.
  • An additive in the copper-catalyzed homocoupling of ketoxime carboxylates to synthesize symmetrical pyrroles.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. Dear Sir / Madame, I would kindly ask you to tell me what is the shelf life of the Sodium Bisulfite, no. 243973, batch no. MKCN9017. In the Certificate of Analysis is not specified the date the product expires. Thank you.

    1 answer
    1. This product is not assigned an expiration date or recommended retest date. Products with no expiration date or recommended retest date should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected. These products are also subject to a one year warranty from the date of shipment. For more information you may access the "Product Dating Information" document under "ADDITIONAL USEFUL DOCUMENTS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS" at the bottom of the Quality Services page with this link: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/life-science/quality-and-regulatory-management/quality-services.

  3. i just want to know that nahso3 assay is 58.5% SO2 in figure but, in msds it was marked assay 95~100%. i don't know reason why. please, explain it to me. assay값의 표기가 58.5% So2로 되어있는데, 실제 MSDS를 보면 95~100%라고 되어있어서 혼동되어 질문드립니다. 혹시 나머지 41.5%는 다른 물질인가요?

    1 answer
    1. The concentration on the Material Safety Data Sheet is in reference to what is in the bottle. There is no preservative or solvent added or included. This is essentially a pure preparation of NaHSO3. This is not a specification. The purity of the product is measured by titration as % SO2. The concentration on the webpage is the purity specification and refers to the % SO2 which is greater than or equal to 58.5%.
