General description

4-Vinyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (VEC) is a cyclic organic compound with the molecular formula C5H6O3. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a high boiling point and is miscible with carbonate and ether solvents used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Our battery grade VEC is differentiated by its high purity and low trace moisture to help ensure consistent performance in battery applications.

Application

Anhydrous, battery grade 4-vinyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (VEC) is commonly used as an electrolyte additive in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to improve battery performance. VEC helps to form a stable film on the anode surface called a solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The SEI acts as a barrier that prevents further reaction between the electrolyte and the anode and thereby enhances the cyclic stability of the battery. For example, the addition of 2 wt.% VEC to the electrolyte formulation enhanced cycling performance in experiments both with Li metal anodes and graphite anodes In the electrolyte formulation, often VEC is added to be 2-10 wt.% of the solvent blend; however, scientists have even used VEC as the sole solvent in a lithium-metal battery with great results including long cycle life over 1000 cycles and reduced flammability
