General description

Lithium aluminum anhydride is effective as a selective reducing agent.[1]The anhydride may be prepared by reacting lithium hydride with aluminum chloride.[2] It is soluble in ether[3] and it can reduce carboxyl group to primary alcohol group with great ease.[2] Other organic compounds that can be reduced by lithium aluminum hydride are aldehydes, ketones, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides,[3] halides, quinones, nitrogen compounds.[4]
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Greener Chemistry. This product has been enhanced for energy efficiency. Find details here.

Application

Lithium aluminum hydride (LAH) can be used as a promising material for hydrogen storage applications. Its properties include high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen densities.[5][6][7]
Lithium aluminum hydride can be used to prepare undec-10-en-1-ol, a key intermediate for the preparation of polythioethers.[8]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. What is the typical size and mass of an individual pellet?

    1 answer
    1. The mass for the 25 G pack size is approximately 24.998 G, the mass for the 100 G pack size is approximately 99.998 G. The size of the pellet is 10 mm × 6 mm (Diameter x Thickness).

      Helpful?

  2. Why should I use Product 323403, the LAH pellets, instead of a fine crystalline powder?

    1 answer
    1. The pellets are recommended for safety reasons. Powdered lithium aluminum hydride can form potentially explosive dust-air mixtures. But use of the lithium aluminum hydride pellets, which can tolerate exposure to air for a short period of time, avoids the dusting associated with the powder. Please note that longer dissolving times, perhaps up to 90 minutes at room temperature, need to be taken into account when using the pellet form.

  3. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.
