General description

Ethylhexyl triazone has a high absorption coefficient and photostability, which makes it an important ingredient in cosmetic formulations, where high SPF value is required.
Ethylhexyl triazone is a ultraviolet-B filter, which is used as a sunscreen agent in skin care products.

Application

Ethylhexyl triazone may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in the following:
  • Cosmetic samples using ultra-high-performance supercritical fluid chromatography (UHPSFC).
  • Topical skincare products using normal-phase high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and densitometry.
  • Environmental samples using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Ethylhexyl triazone (ET) was separated from other sunscreens such as avobenzone, octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate, and diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate and from parabens by normal-phase HPTLC on silica gel 60 as stationary phase. Two mobile phases were particularly effective: (A) cyclohexane-diethyl
