Application

Hanks′ balanced salt solution has been used:
  • in starvation experiments for mammalian cells
  • to collect and maintain brain pieces for primary glial cell culture
  • to wash femoral tissue and bone marrow (BM) to culture mesenchymal stem cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

Balanced salt solution (BSS) in cell culture is multifaceted and has various functions. It serves as an irrigating, transporting, and diluting fluid while maintaining intra- and extracellular osmotic balance. BSS provides cells with water and certain bulk inorganic ions essential for normal cell metabolism. It combines with carbohydrates, such as glucose to act as the principal energy source for cell metabolism. BSS also provides a buffering system to maintain the medium within the physiological pH range (7.2-7.6).
