Application

β-Sitosterol was used to supplement diet of mice to study its effect on body mass accumulation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

β-Sitosterol is a plant sterol that has hypocholesterolemic activity. Only 5% of β-Sitosterol is absorbed by humans. It is hypothesized that the cholesterol-lowering activity is by competing cholesterol for uptake by the cells or by interfering with the esterification of cholesterol. β-Sitosterol is reported to reduce the incidence of colon tumors.
