General description

β;-Caryophyllene is a volatile sesquiterpene compound that can be used as a flavoring agent. It is one of the major volatile organic compounds in Eugenia caryophyllata essential oil, Psidium guajava L. leaves, Arabidopsis thaliana flowers and Artemisia annua L. aerial parts.

Application

  • Essential Oil Constituents as Anti-Inflammatory and Neuroprotective Agents: An Insight through Microglia Modulation.: ß-Caryophyllene shows significant potential as an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective agent by modulating microglia, which plays a crucial role in neuroinflammation (Stojanovic et al., 2024) (Stojanovic et al., 2024).

  • Synergistic Antinociceptive Effect of ß-Caryophyllene Oxide in Combination with Paracetamol, and the Corresponding Gastroprotective Activity.: This research demonstrates that ß-caryophyllene oxide, when combined with paracetamol, has enhanced antinociceptive effects and provides gastroprotection (Espinosa-Juárez et al., 2024) (Espinosa-Juárez et al., 2024).

  • Consumption of ß-Caryophyllene Increases the Mating Success of Bactrocera zonata Males (Diptera: Tephritidae).: The study explores how ß-caryophyllene consumption boosts the mating success of male fruit flies, indicating its potential applications in pest control strategies (Ul Haq et al., 2024) (Ul Haq et al., 2024).

  • Development of ophthalmic nanoemulsions of ß-caryophyllene for the treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis.: This research focuses on creating nanoemulsions containing ß-caryophyllene for treating Acanthamoeba keratitis, demonstrating its potential in ophthalmic therapies (Santos Porto et al., 2024) (Santos Porto et al., 2024).
