General description

The Human Ferritin ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) kit is an in vitro enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative measurement of human Ferritin in serum, plasma, cell culture supernatants and urine.
Ferritin is a heteropolymer globular protein of 450 kDa and is localized to the nucleus, mitochondria and cytoplasm. Ferritin is an intracellular protein containing 24 subunits (heavy and light).

Immunogen

Recombinant Human Ferritin

Application

For research use only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.
Please refer to the attached General ELISA KIT Procedure (sandwich, competitive & Indirect ELISA)
Human Ferritin ELISA Kit has been used to estimate the amount of ferritin in cellular suspension.
Human ferritin ELISA kit. has been used to measure the ferritin secreted in supernatants from THP-1 (tamm-horsfall protein 1) cells that were sequentially treated with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and LLOMe (a lysosome disruption agent).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ferritin mediates iron metabolism and plays a key role in redox homeostasis. Ferritin possesses ferroxidase activity and maintains iron in its non-toxic form. Ferritin acts as an iron-storage protein and stores excessive intracellular iron that is not utilized for the production of heme. Also, iron is released from ferritin upon degradation.
Ferritin/ ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) is a cytoplasmic protein. It acts as a cargo for transport to autophagosomes for degradation. FTH1 maintains the cellular redox status by storing the intracellular iron in a non-toxic and readily available form. It acts as a key antioxidant molecule in various physiologic and pathologic conditions, such as apoptosis, inflammation, vascular protection and neurodegeneration. FTH1 alone or along with ferritin light chain is implicated to detect cancer cells, stem cells, fibroblasts and dendritic cells.
