Biochem/physiol Actions

Leptin receptor (Lepr) belonging to class I cytokine receptor family, binds with leptin, a small non-glycosylated peptide hormone and transduces signal. Lepr expression is present in brain and immune cells. Signal transduction through Lepr regulates fat metabolism in mammals. Lepr is part of the hematopoietic pathway. Lepr is a marker for mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and regulates the regenerative process of bone and cartilage after injury. Lepr regulates pancreatic β cell functions. Polymorphism in Lepr causes metabolic diseases like obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. Mutations in Lepr associates with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) susceptibility.
