General description

Silicone oil is a highly viscous oil[1] made up of poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylphenylsiloxane) chains.[2]

Application

Silicone oil has been used as a medium component in containerless protein crystallization techniques which do not require contact with a solid surface.[3] It was used as an oil bath during the synthesis of methyl 2-methylazulene-1-carboxylate.[4]

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Hi, can this oil be applicable to do high temperature high voltage power device test? The test will be done when the device being biased at kV and imersed in the oil. Will this oil help prevent air breakdown and discharge?

    1 answer
    1. This product has a usable range of -40 to +450 degrees Fahrenheit. The item is not tested for use in any specific application. Suitability would have to be determined by the end user. However, there are certain silicone oils that mention dielectric strengths and that list the potential of silicone oil as a dielectric coolant.

  4. Will this oil work as a Hydraulic oil / fluid ? Note: the cylinder does not cycle per say... It supplies pressure to tension a chain in a Hot Press. it sits at approx.. 400* Deg. F for a week at a time.

    1 answer
    1. This product is identical to the Dow Corning 550 Fluid and has a viscosity of 125 cS. The viscosity/temperature coefficient is 0.76. This product has a suitable working parameter for a temperature range between −40-450 °F. This fluid is typically used with hydraulic arrestors and hydraulic actuated valves. The temperature of your application does not appear to be an issue, however it would be up to the end user to determine suitability based on the specifications cited above.
