General description

Research area: Cell Signaling
Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) is located in most cells in the body but is found in highest concentrations in the liver. Two GPT isoforms, GPT1 and GPT2, are present in mammals.

Application

Glutamic-Pyruvic Transaminase from porcine heart has been used to determine L-lactate levels in aqueous polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions.

Biochem/physiol Actions

GPT is responsible for catalyzing the reversible transamination of α-ketoglutarate and alanine to glutamate and pyruvate. It also plays a critical role in the metabolism of amino acids and gluconeogenesis.
Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) is located in most cells in the body, but is found in highest concentrations in the liver. It is used as a marker of liver disease due to the release of GPT into the blood following liver cell necrosis.

Unit Definition

One unit will convert 1.0 μmole of α-ketoglutarate to L-glutamate per min at pH 7.6 at 37 °C in the presence of L-alanine.
