Biochem/physiol Actions

Chlorotoxin (CLTX) is a peptide isolated from the venom of scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus. It comprises three lysines at the N-terminal region and four disulfide bonds. It can traverse the blood-brain barrier and can associate specifically with cancer cells especially in neuroblastoma, glioma, and medulloblastoma. CLTX binds to chloride-gated channels (CLC30) and the matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) in glioma cells. It is exploited in the imaging probe preparations for aiding non-cancer and cancer cell differentiation.
Potent blocker of small-conductance Cl- channels.

Chlorotoxin (CTX), a disulfide-rich peptide from the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus, has several promising biopharmaceutical properties, including preferential affinity for certain cancer cells, high serum stability, and cell penetration. These properties underpin its potential for use as a drug design scaffold

The superoxide-generating enzyme Nox2 contributes to hypertension and cardiovascular remodeling triggered by activation of the renin-angiotensin system. Multiple Nox2-expressing cells are implicated in angiotensin II-induced (Ang II-induced) pathophysiology, but the importance of Nox2 in leukocyte subsets is poorly understood. Here

We have previously demonstrated that the venom of the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus blocks small-conductance Cl- channels, derived from epithelial cells, when applied to the cytoplasmic surface. We have now purified to near homogeneity, and characterized, the component responsible for this
