General description
Mercury (quicksilver) is extensively used in the manufacture of mercuric (I) and mercuric (II) compounds because it exists in two oxidation states +1 and +2. It is also used in the preparation of organomercury compounds and coordination complexes of mercury. Mercury(II) salts are used in the preparation of industrially important chemical reagents such as Millon′s base, Nessler′s reagent (potassium tetraiodomercurate), one-dimensional polymer (salts of HgNH2+)n), etc.
