General description

Vero cells are anchorage-dependent cells derived from the kidney of African green monkey cells. They have applications in molecular and cell biology research. Vero cells are a useful host for the cultivation of Rabies virus, Reovirus and Japanese encephalitis virus.[1]

Cell Line Origin

African green monkey kidney cells, serum-free

Cell Line Description

Vero cell line (Sigma catalog no. 84113001) adapted to grow in animal component free medium (VP-SFM; Gibco catalog no. 11681-020).

Culture Medium

VP-SFM (Gibco cat no. 11681-020) + 4 mM L-Glutamine (G7513). When freezing cells down use culture medium (50:50 conditioned medium:fresh medium) + 10% DMSO (D2650).

Subculture Routine

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 to 1:6, i.e., seeding at 1-3x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.05% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37 °C.
