product M1255, Calcein Blue to is used to stain cells, but it will stain living or dead cells. For a cell viability stain, one can use Calcein Blue AM. The difference between Calcein Blue and Calcein Blue AM is the methyl-iminodiaceitc acid group that chelates the divalent metal has acetoxymethyl esters on it in Calcein Blue AM. The esters are cleaved inside of viable cells, but remain on the molecule in the absence of active esterases. So, if you use M1255 it will stain all the cell whether alive or dead.
