General description

Biotin is also called as B complex vitamin. It is a bicyclic compound, which has a molecular weight of 244.31 Da. Biotin serves as an important cofactor for mammalian carboxylases. It is found within the cells in free and bound pools.[1]

Application

Biotin has been used:
  • as a M199 media supplement in in vitro culture system[2]
  • as a component of SATO serum free medium for the isolation of cortical oligodendrocyte precursors (OPCs)[3]
  • in biochemical precursors culture for de novo fatty acid synthesis[4]
  • as a component in aggregate culture media[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Essential vitamin that is important for amino acid and energy metabolism, and fatty acid synthesis. It is a prosthetic group in four mammalian carboxylase families and facilitates the binding and transfer of carbon dioxide.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. 2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. If I would like to make 1M biotin stock (B4639), what would be the best way?

    1 answer
    1. A 1 M solution of biotin would require a concentration of 244 mg/mL. The maximum solubility tested for this compound is 50mg/ml in 2M NaOH or NH4OH, which results in a 204 mM solution. Similar rates have been reported for DMSO. Heat and agitation may improve the solubility. However, a precipitate may form upon cooling. A search of the literature did not reveal a more efficient solvent for Biotin. The preparation of a 1M solution would have to be determined experimentally.

  4. Hello, How can I reconstruct biotin powder (B4639)? which solvent? and how can I prepare 50mM biotin solution for 1 ml final solution?

    1 answer
    1. This product is soluble in 50 mg/ml 2 M NH4OH.
