Application

Guanidine thiocyanate has been used:
  • as a denaturing agent to study its effects on surface activity of globular protein
  • for the extraction of total RNA from primary hepatocytes
  • as a component of the incubating buffer for extraction of DNA from human bone
  • as a component of the guanidine thiocyanate (GITC) lysis buffer for extraction of elephant shark DNA
  • as a component of lysis solution for extraction of RNA from rat pancreatic tissues
Chaotropic agent and strong denaturant; solubilizes cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Guanidine thiocyanate (GTC) is a powerful protein denaturant and can denature endogenous ribonucleases. It plays a role in separation of ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) from ribosomes. GTC in combination with phenol and chloroform can be used in isolation of total RNA from cells and tissues.
