General description

Sodium nitrate (chile salpeter) is a hygroscopic compound and soluble in water. It is primarily used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. Additionally, sodium nitrate is used in the manufacture of glass and charcoal briquettes, and the synthesis of potassium compounds.

Application

Sodium nitrate is used:
  • To modify hydroxyapatite to prepare heterogeneous catalyst (sodium nitrate/hydroxyapatite) for Claisen–Schmidt condensation process to synthesis of chalcones.
  • In the direct acetoxylation of arenes under an anhydrous environment of TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), acetic acid, and acetic anhydride.
  • As a redox mediator in the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols in biphase electrolysis at ambient temperature.
