General description

Ganglioside monosialodihexosylganglioside (GM3) are membrane-bound glycosphingolipids (GSLs). It comprises a sialic acid residue and an oligosaccharide head structure. GM3 is present in milk and kidney cells. GM3 is the most widely present ganglioside in tissues.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ganglioside monosialodihexosylganglioside (GM3) modulates apoptosis, cell proliferation and differentiation. It is also essential for cellular signaling pathways, cell adhesion and mobility. GM3 prevents the action of fibroblast growth factor receptor. Low levels of ganglioside GM3 is associated with the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. GM3 maintains immunological functions by inhibiting cytokine production.

Gangliosides are sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids. They occur especially on the cellular surfaces of neuronal cells, where they form a complex pattern, but are also found in many other cell types. The paper provides a general overview on their structures, occurrence
