General description

Research area: Cell Signaling

The GAST gene is mapped to human chromosome 17q21. Gastrin is a linear peptide. It is a gastrointestinal hormone, produced by G cells in the stomach.

Application

Gastrin I human has been used:
  • to treat AGS stably transfected with gastrin receptor/cholecystokinin receptor 2 (CCK2R) (AGS-GR) cells to study the expression and secretion of clusterin (CLU) in human gastric cancer cells
  • as a component of growth medium for culturing mouse normal esophageal epithelial organoid (mNEEO)
  • as a supplement in basal culture media to use for organoid-like cultures
  • as a molecular weight marker to calibrate superdex® 30 columns.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Gastrin plays a major role in parietal cell function, gastric epithelial cell multiplication, and differentiation. It acts as a modulator in maintaining and organizing gastric mucosa. It is produced in the stomach and stimulates gastric acid secretion. Gastrin is an important growth factor for the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrin binds with high affinity to the cholecystokinin B receptor (CCKBR) that belongs to the family of G-protein coupled receptors. It induces islet differentiation in the pancreas.
