General description

FBS remains a popular media supplement because it provides a wide array of functions in cell culture. FBS delivers nutrients, growth and attachment factors and protects cells from oxidative damage and apoptosis by mechanisms that are difficult to reproduce in serum-free media (SFM) systems.

Application

Fetal Bovine Serum was used in different types of cell culture as a supplement, such as the following:
  • PC12 cells grown in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium supplemented with Fetal Bovine Serum along with other components.
  • HeLa cells were maintained in Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium containing Fetal Bovine Serum along with other components.
  • BaF3 Cell Culture (cells were maintained in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with Fetal Bovine Serum along with other components).
  • Primary hippocampal cell cultures (cells were maintained in Eagle′s minimum essential medium and supplemented with heat-inactivated fetal bovine serum along with other components).
  • HeLa, Cos1 and Cos7 cells were cultured in Dulbecco modified Eagle medium (DMEM) with fetal bovine serum along with other components.
Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the most common serum used to supplement cell culture media due to its high nutritional content. Although it is relatively low in protein, FBS is effective in promoting and sustaining growth of vertebrate mammalian and insect cells.
