Heparin Cofactor II (HCII) is a member of the serpin superfamily and acts as a serine protease inhibitor. It rapidly inactivates thrombin in the presence of dermatan sulfate, heparan sulfate, or heparin. However, it should be noted that Heparin Cofactor II itself is not a proper anticoagulant. When used alone, it will not prevent blood from coagulating. For anticoagulant purposes, substances such as Heparin sodium salt, EDTA, or Sodium Citrate are commonly used in research and clinical laboratories.
