General description

Adenosine 5′-diphosphate (ADP) is an adenine nucleotide involved in energy storage and nucleic acid metabolism via its conversion into ATP by FOF1-ATP synthases. ADP can also be obtained by adenylate monophosphate (AMP) reaction catalyzed by adenylate kinase. ADP is a platelet agonist that is secreted from platelet dense granules. It promotes platelet activation through its interaction with ADP receptors P2Y1 and P2Y12. Upon conversion of ADP to adenosine by ecto-ADPases, platelet activation is inhibited via adenosine receptors.

Application

Adenosine 5′-diphosphate sodium salt has been used:
  • as a positive control of platelet aggregation to analyze antiplatelet activity of purified disintegrin by aggregometery.
  • in the preparation of stock solution for a mito stress test.
  • as a positive control in flow cytometry analysis to study the effect of pentameric C-reactive protein (pCRP) and monomeric CRP (mCRP) on the CD62p (P-selectin) expression of platelets.
  • as a platelet agonist to stimulate platelet aggregation.
