General description

Albumin is the most abundant plasma protein in human. It has a molecular weight of 66.5 kDa.[1]

Application

Albumin from human serum has been used:
  • as a carrier of CPT-11 (irinotecan, Campto) and SN-38 to investigate its binding to human plasma proteins[2]
  • to study the adsorption of water and acetonitrile (AN) vapor on a human serum albumin[3]
  • to study its effect on wound healing process[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Albumins are soluble monomeric proteins found in the body fluids and tissues of animals and in some plant seeds. Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones. Serum albumins are also vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood.
Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones, and is vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood. Albumin is also seen to bind to exogenous substances, particularly drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, warfarin), and strongly influence their pharmacokinetics. Oxidative stress leading to changes in the redox state of albumin has widely varied effects on its physiological function.
Serum albumin primarily mediates divalent cation transportation, fatty acid and drug complex formation and transport.[5] The albumin levels in the serum indicate the disease progression in advanced liver disease.[1] Low body weight and decreased serum albumin is associated with colorectal cancer.[6]

This work demonstrates for the first time that binding of various compounds within subdomain IB of human serum albumin (HSA) provokes characteristic changes in the near-UV circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of the protein. It can be inferred from the spectroscopic

Historically, sunlight has seemed to fortify antituberculosis resistance. Evidence is presented here suggesting a role for vitamin D in this effect. Preterm infants are highly susceptible to lung injury. While both chorioamnionitis and antenatal steroids induce lung maturation, chorioamnionitis is also associated with adverse lung development. We investigated the ability of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from ventilated preterm infants to restore

Questions

  1. What is the purpose of the charcoal purification step, and has it been verified that charcoal is not present in the final product? Additionally, how can it be ensured that components of the buffer used for lyophilization are not present in the final product if they are not tested for on the COA?

    1 answer
    1. The purpose of the charcoal purification step is to remove fatty acids from the albumin solution, and it has been verified that no traces of charcoal are present in the final product. As for ensuring that components of the buffer used for lyophilization are not present in the final product, it is currently considered salt-free, but there is potential to characterize it by ICP-MS.
