General description
Sulfur trioxide (SO3) is an oxide of sulfur. It is released during the combustion of sulfur bearing fuels. Sulfur dioxide in the presence of vanadia catalyst oxidizes to form sulfur trioxide. The kinetics of this reaction has been studied. Density function theory and ab initio methods have been used to study the hydrolysis of SO3 to form sulfuric acid.
Application
Sulfur trioxide (SO3) may be used in the synthesis of methane sulfonic acid (MSA) by sulfonating methane.

It has recently been demonstrated that (bi)sulfite (hydrated sulfur dioxide) reacts with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) via a nonradical, nucleophilic reaction, and further proposed that the radical adduct (DMPO/()SO(3)(-)) formation in biological systems is an artifact and not the result of

Emissions of sulfur trioxide (SO3) are a key component of plume opacity and acid deposition. Consequently, these emissions need to be low enough to not cause opacity violations and acid deposition. Generally, a small fraction of sulfur (S) in coal

Polysaccharide extracted from Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta) is a group of sulfated heteropolysaccharide; for simplicity, the sulfated polysaccharide is referred to as ulvan in this paper. In this study, different sulfate content ulvans were prepared with sulfur trioxide/N,N-dimethylformamide (SO3-DMF) in formamide
