General description

Acetonitrile (CH3CN) is one of the simplest forms of organic nitrile, at room-temperature; it exists as a colorless liquid and has ether like odor. Its properties include melting point, -45.7 °C; boiling point, 82 °C; and density, 0.786 g cm-3. It is produced by dehydration of acetamide and can also be obtained by hydrogenation of a mixture of carbon monoxide and ammonia. Upon hydrolysis, it produces acetic acid and ammonia, whereas upon reduction it gives ethylamine. It is very slightly toxic, though upon metabolism in body gives highly toxic hydrogen cyanide. It is completely miscible with water. Generally it finds application, as an eluant in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
