General description

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is formed as side reaction product during the esterification reaction of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol. It readily forms complexes with 3d transition metal cations in the presence of alkaline hydroxide. Its solutions are widely employed for antifreeze and lubricating applications. Oxidative degradation of DEG with ozone by modified Fenton process (mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferric salt) was described in a study.

Application

Diethylene glycol may be used for electrodeposition of cadmium sulfide (CdSe) films. It may be used to compose the fluoride ion electrolytes, for use in the preparation of self-organized titania nanotube arrays.

This paper describes a study of oxidation of diethylene glycol (DEG) by ozone and modified Fenton process (hydrogen peroxide and ferric salt mixture) in aqueous solution. Both oxidation processes were able to oxidize relatively high concentrations of DEG effectively. DEG
