General description

Zinc finger and SCAN domain containing protein 4C (UniProt: Q80VJ6) is encoded by the Zscan4c (also known as Gm397) gene (Gene ID: 245109) in mouse. Zscan4 is an embryonic stem (ES) cell-specific transcription factor required to regulate pluripotency, facilitate telomere elongation, and defy cellular senescence. It is expressed during zygotic genome activation in mouse two-cell embryos. It protects embryos from DNA damage by stabilizing the B-DNA form of microsatellite repeat DNA. It binds to the TGCACAC motif in CA/TG microsatellite repeats and regulates telomere elongation to maintain genomic stability and acts as an activator of spontaneous telomere sister chromatid exchange (T-SCE) in undifferentiated ES cells. Dysfunction of Zscan4 during development or in mESCs leads to implantation failure, telomere maintenance defects, and chromosomal rearrangements. (Ref.: Srinivasan, R., et al., (2020), Sci. Adv., 6, eaaz9115)

Immunogen

KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to 16 amino acids from the C-terminal half of mouse Zscan4. The immunogen sequence is conserved between Zcsan4 family proteins (Zscan4b, Zscan4C, Zscan4d and Zscan4f).

Application

Anti-Zscan4, Cat. No. AB4340, is a rabbit polyclonal antibody that detects Zscan4 and is tested for use in Western Blotting.

Unlike pluripotent cells, which generate only embryonic tissues, totipotent cells can generate a full organism, including extra-embryonic tissues. A rare population of cells resembling 2-cell-stage embryos arises in pluripotent embryonic stem (ES) cell cultures. These 2-cell-like cells display molecular features
