Application

Magnesium (powder) can be used as a reducing agent to synthesize:
  • Titanium alloy hydride powder by the reduction of upgraded titania slag (UGS) under hydrogen atmosphere.
  • Ultrafine metallic iron (bcc-Fe) powders from hematite (α-Fe2O3) by ball-milling process.

It can also be used as a reducing agent in ruthenium(III) complex catalyzed atom-transfer radical addition (ATRA) and cyclization (ATRC) reactions. Magnesium does not generate free radicals but it generates and regenerates the catalytically active ruthenium(II) species.

A new catalytic procedure for atom-transfer radical addition (ATRA) and cyclization (ATRC) reactions is described. The combination of the ruthenium(III) complex [RuCl(2)Cp*(PPh3)] (Cp*: pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) with magnesium allows these reactions to be performed under mild conditions with high efficiency. The development of nanocarriers that selectively release guest molecules on sensing a particular biological signal is being actively pursued in nanomedicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Here we report a protein-based nanocarrier that opens in the presence of intracellular adenosine-5'-triphosphate
