Gene Information

General description

Apolipoprotein(a) (UniProt P08519; also known as Apo(a), Lp(a)) is encoded by the LPA gene (Gene ID 4018) in human. Apo(a) is the main constituent of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)). It is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-19) that is subsequently cleaved off. Lipoprotein (a)/Lp(a) is composed of Apo(a) covalently bound to apolipoprotein B-100/ApoB via a single disulfide bond on kringle (K)IV type 9 (KIV9) to a site near ApoB low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-binding site. Structurally, Apo (a) contains ten subtypes of KIV sequences, with the KIV2 subtype present in multiple identical repeats, followed by a KV sequence and an inactive protease domain. Elevated levels of Lp(a) are considered as a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases and peripheral arterial disease. Lp(a) is a preferential lipoprotein carrier of oxidized phospholipids (OxPLs) and circulating levels of oxidized LDL are strongly associated with angiographically documented coronary artery disease. Apo(a) is known to be proteolytically cleaved. Apo(a) fragments accumulate in atherosclerotic lesions, where they may promote thrombogenesis.

Specificity

Clone LPA4 detects Apolipoprotein(a) in human and non-human primates.

Immunogen

Human Lipoprotein a (Lp(a)).

Application

Anti-Apolipoprotein(a), clone LPA4, Biotin Conjugate, Cat. No. MABS1284-B, is a mouse monoclonal antibody that detects Apolipoprotein (a)/Apo(a)/Lp(a) in human and non-human primates and has been tested for use in ELISA, Immunoprecipitation, and Western Blotting.
