Rose Bengal is the sodium salt of tetraiodotetrachlorouorescein, C₂₀H₂O₅I₄Cl₄Na₂. It is an anionic water-soluble xanthene dye.

Application

Rose bengal has several microbilogical staining applications including:

• Conn′s technique for bacteria in soil and Kreyberg′s stain for keratin and mucus
• counterstaining hematoxylin
• staining cellular inclusions, together with Bismark brown
