Description générale

The gene NEFM (neurofilament, medium polypeptide) is mapped to human chromosome 8q21. The protein has KSP (Lys-Ser-Pro) repeats in the carboxyl-terminal. It is mainly present in the nervous system.

Application

Actions biochimiques/physiologiques

NEFM (neurofilament, medium polypeptide) protein is involved in the axonal transport and neuronal cell death. Phosphorylation of NEFM allows association between NEFM and microtubules. Deregulated phosphorylation of NEFM is associated with Alzheimer disease (AD).
