It should be possible to dissolve in any suitable cell culture media that does not contain phenol red in the formulation. Neutral Red is a vital stain, so the dye needs to be dissolved into an isotonic solution and should not be dissolved in water.

Neutral red has been used as a staining agent for micro- and meso-plankton.[1] It has been used as a staining agent for nematocytes.[2]

It can also be used as a pH indicator.[3] It is used for cell viability assay. The dye accumulates in the lysosomes of living healthy cells, but not in damaged cells.[4]
