General description

L-α-Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is an asymmetric molecule with glycerol backbone and occurs naturally in lecithin of egg yolk. It is a phospholipid and major choline source in mammalian cells. It is crucial for very low-density lipoprotein secretion in hepatocytes. It is essential for the acetylcholine synthesis functions to nourish the brain. PC plays a crucial role in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Deficiencies of enzymes in PC biosynthetic pathway leads to an array of metabolic disorder. Intracellular levels of hepatic PC to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) ratio contributes to pathophysiology non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It has anti-inflammatory functionality and is effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease. PC administration therapy is effective for treating benign symmetric lipomatosis.

Application

L-α-Phosphatidylcholine has been used:
  • for liposome preparation
  • as a component of stabilizer solution for preparing dispersed curcuminoid submicron particle (CSP)
  • as a component of serum free substitute for whole blood cells

Biochem/physiol Actions

A major structural phospholipid in brain, comprising approx. 15% of total lipid; primarily localized to gray matter.

Packaging

Packaged under Argon

Preparation Note

Prepared by a modification of the procedure of Singleton, W.S., et al., J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc., 42, 53 (1965).

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. Is there an average molar mass that can be used for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Typical lots of soybean phosphatidylcholine have fatty acid contents of approximately 13% C16:0 (palmitic), 4% C18:0 (stearic), 10% C18:1 (oleic), 64% C18:2 (linoleic), and 6% 18:3 (linolenic) with other fatty acids being minor contributors. This would calculate to an average molecular weight of approximately 776. Please see the link below to review additional information available in the product datasheet:

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. Hi, What is the phase transition teemperature of this product? Thank you, Tülay.

    1 answer
    1. The phase transition temperature of this product has not been determined. Note that R and R' are variable fatty acid residues that could vary by lot and thereby cause a lot-to-lot variation in phase transition temperature.

      Helpful?

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
