Gene Information

General description

Linoleic acid (LA) is the precursor for the synthesis of arachidonic prostaglandins and other eicosanoids. LA is present in vegetable oils and meat.

Application

Fatty acid that is typically bound to a carrier molecule such as BSA or cyclodextrin for use in cell culture.
Linoleic acid has been used as a component of S12 medium for cardiomyocytes differentiation, minimum essential medium α for spermatogonial stem cell culture and for endothelial differentiation of mouse adipose-derived stem cells (mASC).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Linoleic acid increases cell proliferation and gene expression of PPARα and its target genes such as acyl-CoA oxidase in primary duck hepatocytes .
Linoleic acid (LA) may improve wound healing in diabetic rat. The levels of LA in adipose tissue and platelets are correlated with coronary artery disease. It may induce tumor and apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells. Studies also support their protective effects in lymphocytes. Linoleic acid is typically bound to a carrier molecule such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) or cyclodextrin for use in cell culture.

  1. Can I resuspend in DMSO? If so, what is the recommended concentration to resuspend at?

    1. The solubility of this material in DMSO is not determined. However, sources state that Linoleic acid (CAS 60-33-3) is soluble in DMSO at concentrations of at least 43 to 90 mg/mL (approx. 154 to 321 mM). Please note that this information has not been validated internally.

  2. What volume does the 100mg come dissolved in, i.e., what is the initial concentration? I have 50uL of liquid left, how can I figure out how many mg that is?

    1. Linoleic Acid is provided as a neat, pure liquid. The initial volume can be calculated by dividing the mass by the density. For example, a 100 mg bottle will contain 0.1g divided by 0.902 g/mL, which equals 110 µL.
