General description

Antibiotic Antimycotic Solution is formulated to contain 10,000 units penicillin, 10 mg streptomycin and 25μg Amphotericin B per mL, and is solubilized in a proprietary citrate buffer. It is recommended for use in cell culture applications at 10mL/L. Antibioticantimycotic solution is generally used to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms including bacteria and fungi in cell culture media.

Application

Antibiotic antimycotic solution has been used:
  • as a supplement in different types of cell culture media.[1][2][3]
  • as a component of phosphate buffer saline (PBS) sterile solution to prevent contamination of periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) tissues that are isolated and cultured in the experiments.[4]
  • as a component of storage solution for preserving tracheal segments harvested for subsequent experimental investigation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mode of Action: Penicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis. Streptomycin inhibits prokaryote protein synthesis by preventing the transition from initiation complex to chain-elongating ribosome and causes miscoding. Amphotericin B interferes with fungal membrane permeability by forming channels in the membranes and causing small molecules to leak out.

Antimicrobial spectrum: Includes Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. I am currently using your Antibiotic Antimycotic Solution (Product No. A5955) and would like to know the recommended storage conditions and stability of the product once it has been diluted to 1× working concentration .

    1 answer
    1. With product A5955, we recommend storing the product at all times unmixed, at -20 °C.  We only have one limited storage condition tested when in solution at 37 °C, and it appears to be stable for up to 3 days.  It is best to produce the product each time and use it immediately.

  2. Hello, Could you please confirm that the antibiotic/antimycotic is tested for sterility as this does not appear on your CoA.

    1 answer
    1. This product is sterile filtered through a 0.1 μm membrane. However, sterility testing is not performed on the finished product.

  3. I am looking at the SDS for product number A5955, Antibiotic Antimycotic soln. I do not see Amphotericin B in composition of ingredients (3.2 mixtures). I want to know why. Thank you.

    1 answer
    1. Section 3 of SDS shows only the hazardous component information. Product# A5955 contains microgram amounts of Amphotericin B. At this concentration it is non-hazardous, hence section 3 of SDS does not list Amphotericin B.
