General description

Glycerol is widely used in industries based on food, polymer, resins, tobacco, detergents, explosives, drugs and personal care products. It is most commonly employed cheap feedstock in the chemical industry. Its transformation to various commercial value-added chemicals has been proposed. A fast enzymatic assay for the determination of glycerol based on its reaction with ATP has been described.

Application

Glycerol has been used in the synthesis of poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) pre-polymer, which is required for the fabrication of PGS scaffolds. It may be employed to protect the human red blood-cells from damage during the process of freezing and thawing.
