General description

Phenol/carbolic acid is mainly produced by hospital pharmacy as it is unavailable in premixed liquid form. It is not highly soluble in water. Phenol should be refrigerated and protected from light exposure to maintain its shelf life of approximately one year. Kidneys can excrete phenol as several conjugated derivatives.

Application

Phenol has been used in the incubation of pellet for RNA extraction.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phenol has the ability to denature protein, hence can lead to denervation. At lower concentration, it can serve as a local anaesthetic and can also act as a neurolytic agent in higher concentration. It is also linked with tissue damage at higher concentrations.
