General description

Iodine is an efficient, inexpensive, non-toxic, easy-to-handle electrophilic reagent used in various organic transformations. The electrophilic properties of iodine are effectively utilized in the cyclization of heteroatom-containing alkenyl and alkynyl derivatives. It is also used as an oxidizing agent in the aromatization of α,β-unsaturated cyclohexenone derivatives, and their heterocyclic analogs.
