General description

FAM20B (family with sequence similarity 20, member B) gene encodes a protein belonging to a family of related proteins called family with sequence similarity 20 (FAM20). The protein contains 409 amino acids with type II transmembrane protein topology. It is weakly similar to a Golgi kinase encoded by four-jointed.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

FAM20B (family with sequence similarity 20, member B) functions as a kinase and phosphorylates the xylose residue in the glycosaminoglycan–protein linkage region of proteoglycans and regulates the number of glycosaminoglycan chains. Its overexpression is found to increase both chondroitin sulfate and heparan sulfate in HeLa cells. It is involved in the regulation of cartilage matrix production and the timing of skeletal development.
