General description

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), a linear polyether of ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol), is soluble in water, benzene, ethanol, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. However, it is insoluble in diethyl ether and hexane. This non-ionic polymer can exist in the monomer and aqueous phases.

Application

Poly(ethylene glycol) has been used:

  • in cryopreservation of cell-laden multi-assay platforms (MAPs)
  • as a macromolecular crowder to study its effects on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated type-I collagen
  • as a model surfactant in surfactant formulations to evaluate the interfacial aggregation of antibody formulations in response to interfacial stress

Biochem/physiol Actions

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is used in several applications including medicine. This polymer occurs as a preservative and is used in biomedical applications like drug delivery systems, biosensing, and tissue engineering. PEG is also used in cosmetic ointments and creams. It is used as a binding and dispersing agent in chemical and other industries.

Microenvironments of biological cells are dominated in vivo by macromolecular crowding and resultant excluded volume effects. This feature is absent in dilute in vitro cell culture. Here, we induced macromolecular crowding in vitro by using synthetic macromolecular globules of nm-scale
