Allgemeine Beschreibung

Tn antigen is a truncated O-glycan, that is commonly noticed in colorectal cancer (CRC). It is usually expressed at high levels in cancer cells. Tn antigen is small in size and simple in structure. It has a non-physiological glycan structure in humans, hence it may be identified as foreign by the immune system.

Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

Tn antigen stimulates colorectal cancer metastasis through the activation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, mediated by H-Ras. It acts as a precursor to several significant complex O-glycans. Subpopulations of blood cells in all lineages carrying the Tn antigen results in a hematological disorder called Tn syndrome.

Immature truncated O-glycans such as Tn antigen are frequently detected in human colorectal cancer (CRC); however, the precise pathological consequences of Tn antigen expression on CRC are unknown. T-synthase is the key enzyme required for biosynthesis of mature O-glycans. Here

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer type worldwide. It is characterized by a high expression of aberrantly glycosylated ligands, such as the Tn antigen (GalNAcα1-Ser/Thr), which is a major ligand for the C-type lectin macrophage galactose-type lectin (MGL).
