Gene Information

General description

Transferrin is an 80 kDa serum glycoprotein, which has an half-life of 8 to 10 days. The gene is located on human chromosome 3q22.1. Transferrin is expressed in hepatocytes.

Application

Transferrin has been used:
  • in isolation of epidermal stem cells and cell expansion[1]
  • to study the effect of compound treatment on transferrin uptake
  • for transferrin uptake and confocal imaging

Biochem/physiol Actions

Transferrin was shown to promote the proliferation of human lymphocytes. This effect is directly proportional to the level of iron present. [2]
Transferrin facilitates the transfer of iron to erythron and peripheral tissues. Mutations in this gene is associated with atransferrinemia. Transferrin is required for fetal development. It is non immunogenic and transferrin-conjugated drugs inhibits cardiotoxicity and drug resistance.

Analysis Note

Purity by agarose electrophoresis.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How long is this product (Transferrin human, T3309) stable upon reconstitution in water?

    1 answer
    1. When filter sterilized, aqueous solutions are expected to be stable at 4 °C for 5-10 days or in aliquots at -20°C for extended periods. Please see the link below to review additional information available in the product datasheet:

  2. HOW IS THIS PROTEIN PRODUCED AND WHAT IS THE REST 2% IMPURITY? THANKS!

    1 answer
    1. This product is prepared by an ammonium sulfate precipitation process followed by a heat treatment and ion exchange chromatography purification. The specific details are considered proprietary. There is no treatment or handling during production that would be expected to cause deglycosylation of the protein. The residual impurities have not been identified. This product is tested for endotoxin and iron. 4. What is the carbohydrate content of human transferrin?

    1 answer
    1. We have found the information on transferrin in a reference book:The Plasma Proteins, F.W. Putnam, ed, volume 2, chapter 4, Table II.According to the table, Transferrin is 6 percent carbohydrate, citing G.A. Jamieson, J. Biol. Chem. 240(7), 2914-2920 (1965).The table also gives information on the percentage of each type of monosaccharide that is present.
