General description

Fetal bovine serum (FBS), a traditional serum supplement,[1] is used in animal cell culture media.[2] It is obtained from the fetus of the cow.[2]

Application

FBS Superior has been used:
  • as a component of differentiation medium, growth medium, induction medium, and Dulbecco′s modified Eagle medium (DMEM) for murine thermogenic adipocytes culture[3]
  • as a component of the culture medium along with DMEM high glucose (HG) for cell viability check[4]
  • as a component of minimum essential medium Eagle (MEM) to cultivate Caco-2 human colon adenocarcinoma cells[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Fetal bovine serum(FBS) Superior is a South American source of FBS supplemented with various growth-promoting compounds to allow for a more consistent product. This supplementation can reduce or eliminate the need to test multiple batches on specific cell lines. FBS Superior can be used just like regular FBS, delivers nutrients, growth, and attachment factors, and protects cells from oxidative damage and apoptosis by mechanisms that are difficult to reproduce in serum-free media (SFM) systems.

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) comprises growth factors (GFs) and other elements that are required for the expansion, maintenance, attachment, and proliferation of adipose-derived stromal cells (ASC) in vitro.[1]

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions

    1 answer
    1. The suitability of this serum product has not been tested following incubation at 37°C. Fetal Bovine Serum is typically heat-inactivated by incubating at 56°C for 30 minutes.
This treatment inactivates the complement system, as well as other undetermined constituents that impact cell growth in culture. Culture medium containing heat-inactivated sera are often supplemented with specific cytokines and/or hormones to assure cell health. Some more robust cell lines may better tolerate medium that has been treated for 72 hours at 37°C, however general cell culture protocols typically require medium refreshment or replacement every 2 – 3 days to maintain a healthy cell population.

  2. Est ce que le FBS superior S06115 doit être décomplémenté?

    1 answer
    1. Typically, heat inactivation is used to deactivate serum complement. This product has not been heat inactivated. If this product is to be used in applications where serum complement may interfere, such as antibody-mediated complement cytotoxicity, heat inactivation is often preferred. If the serum complement is not an issue in any downstream assays, heat inactivation is not necessary. This would be up to the end user to determine.

    Best FBS

Best FBS I know so far. No need to testing the Lot before use, no Lot to Lot variations, suitable for all cell lines we use, we never had a bad experience with this FBS.
