General description

Mannan is the main component of yeast cell wall polysaccharides broadly present in nature, such as in plants, bacteria, yeasts, and other organisms. It comprises a highly branched complex carbohydrate, an α-1,6 backbone with α-1,2- and α-1,3-attached mannose side chains.

Application

Mannan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used to coat the microtiter wells to quantify the levels of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) using a mannan-binding enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Mannan from Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used in a study to assess nonopsonic uptake of Mycobacterium avium complex by human monocytes and alveolar macrophages. [1] It has also been used in a study to investigate new lectins from bulbs of Croccus sativum. [2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mannan exhibits several biological properties, including antiproliferative, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. It is used as a hardener ingredient and as an emulsion stabilizer. Mannan is also involved in the inhibition of pathogen adherence, regulation of bacterial growth, and enhancement of the immune response.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. I understood that the main chain of Mannose typically forms a backbone connected by 1,4-glycosidic bonds. However, I noticed product description states the backbone is connected by 1,6 bonds. Is this different from I previously understood?

    1 answer
    1. TS Answer: There is a difference between the structure of Mannan from plants and Mannan from yeast; this product (from Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is the latter. Mannan from plants has the β-(1-4) linkages you mentioned. However, Mannan from yeast has an α-(1-6) linked backbone, with α-(1-2) and α-(1-3) linked mannose or glucose branches.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. What is the molecular weight in Dalton

    1 answer
    1. The molecular weight is not analyzed on a lot to lot basis. It will be a mixture of polymers of variable molecular weights in the range of 34 - 62.5 kDa.
