General description

Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) expressed in guinea pig brain contains 167 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 18,256Da.
Research area: Cell SignallingMyelin basic protein (MBP) is an important constituent of the myelin sheath of CNS (central nervous system). It is an auto-immunogen.

Application

Myelin Basic Protein fromguinea pig brain has been used as a kinase substrate: to analyse in vitrokinase activity, in protein phosphorylation analysis, in ATG1 kinaseassay

Biochem/physiol Actions

Major structural protein of CNS myelin. Used to induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.
Mutation of the myelin basic protein gene induces dysmyelination; used to induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.
Used as a kinase substrate.
Myelin basic protein (MBP) plays a vital role in formation of myelin sheath and is associated with the various neurological disorders. MBP function as an antigenic target in autoimmune disease experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). MBP plays an essential role in cytoskeletal turnover and membrane extension. Additionally, it is also involved in Fyn-mediated signaling pathways, sequestration of phosphoinositides and regulation of calcium homoeostasis. MBP functions as an in vitro substrate for mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP) kinase and aids in the purification and functional studies of enzyme.
