General description

Cyanobacteria BG-11 Freshwater Solution is a 50X chemstock used to prepare cyanobacteria BG-11 media for culturing cyanobacteria, such as Synechocystis 6803, Nostoc sp. PCC 9104, and Nostoc sp. PCC 9025.

Application

Cyanobacteria BG-11 Freshwater Solution has been used:
  • to culture Synechococcus sp.[1]
  • for culturing Chlorella minutissima[2]
  • as a diluting agent to measure the growth rate at different temperatures in Microcystis aeruginosa[3]

Formula variant

With major salts and trace metals.

Reconstitution

When used for marine species add 10g/L sodium chloride and 1μg/L vitamin B12.
Use at 20ml/L.

Protocols

Phycology media can be prepared from concentrated solutions or from powdered salt mixtures. The concentrated solutions are complete, including vitamins, and should be stored frozen.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. May I use these salts with BG11 solution for medium preparation? is it correct to use 20mL of product C3061 + 20g of product S9883 with deionised water to prepare 1L of final medium?

    1 answer
    1. Product C3061, or Cyanobacteria BG-11 Freshwater Solution is meant to be used for the cultivation of cyanobacteria typically growing in freshwater. Marine species can also be grown with this solution, provided that it is supplemented with 10g/L sodium chloride and 1μg/L vitamin B12. Sea salts found in catalog no. S9883 have not been tested in combination with Product C3061, and as such it cannot be confirmed if marine species would grow in these conditions. Regarding the preparation of the Cyanobacteria BG-11 Freshwater Solution, 20 mL of the solution shall be diluted in 1 liter of water. For the cultivation of marine species, 10 grams of sodium chloride and 1 µg of vitamin B12 shall be added per liter of prepared medium.

  2. Hi, is this item have an ex stock? Is this media ready to be used or it need to be add with other trace element before use? My sample is from fresh water and try to culture and isolate different type of cyanobacteria such as Cylindrospermopsis , etc

    1 answer
    1. This medium is a 50X concentrate. 20 mL of this product is sufficient to prepare 1L of 1X culture medium. This formulation is intended for use in freshwater culture. For use with marine organisms, add 10 g/L sodium chloride and 1 µg/L vitamin B12 to the prepared 1X medium. No additional trace elements are required.
