Transferrin is an important supplement in serum-free tissue culture media.

Transferrin is glycoprotein, approx. 80 kDa, with two binding sites for iron. It binds Fe3+ extremely tightly (Kdiss 10-30 to 10-27), protecting against oxidant effects of free plasma iron.
