General description

A useful agent for radioimmunoimaging.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a metal chelating agent, which is used in treating patients with heavy-metal poisonings like lead or mercury. It is also used to minimize the non-specific serum protein interactions in enzyme immunoassays. Due to its ability to inhibit protein agglutination, it is useful to make blood/plasma samples and in immunoanalysis to detect CD3 cells. EDTA combines with buffers or ionic salts to stimulate the immune cells in the blood samples. It is used in multiple aspects to treat and analyze psoriasis. EDTA functions as an antioxidant to combat psoriasis, while it is also used to understand the disease at a molecular level.[1][2]

Application

EDTA, 500 mM Solution, pH 8.0, ULTROL® Grade has been used along with phosphate buffer saline (PBS) for cell disruption to harvest crypts in situ hybridization of nematodes.[3] It has also been used as a component of isoelectric focusing solution (IEF) to resuspend myofibrils for protein studies.[4]

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. Is there a specific base used to get this to pH 8, e.g., NaOH, NH4OH, or TEA?

    1 answer
    1. The base used for pH adjustment of this product is sodium hydroxide.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

      Helpful?

  4. I need to get 100 mM EDTA pH 6.5 for RNA work. I guess I could start with EDTA pH 8, but I need to make sure that it's RNase free. Which of your EDTA products are suitable for RNA work? Thank you

    1 answer
    1. A molecular biology grade is suggested as the reagent is quality guaranteed to ensure it is RNAse free. An item of interest would be product E7889. This is a ~0.5 M EDTA solution with a pH that will be within the range of 7.5 - 8.5. It is suitable for molecular biology as no DNases, RNases, Nickase, or proteases are detected in this reagent. The lot specific certificate of analysis should be reviewed for this product to determine the specific concentration/pH that the item was released with. Upon verification of these details, this item can be diluted to 100 mM with the appropriate pH adjustment using RNase free reagents.
