General description

Methyl cellulose (MC) is a simple derivative of cellulose.

Application

Methyl cellulose has been used:
  • as a supplement for culturing multicellular spheroids of SH-SY5Y cells
  • as a supplement for culturing tumor cell spheroids
  • to generate and study the rheological behavior of aqueous mullite-albumin-methylcellulose systems

Biochem/physiol Actions

Methyl cellulose (MC) acts as a laxative and is hydrophilic. It has therapeutic effects against constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulosis due to its bulk-forming and stool softening properties. MC has the potential to treat patients with ileostomies and colostomies. It may also be used as a stabilizer and emulsifier. MC is a component of eye drops and contact lens solutions.
